She is associate professor emerita, Southern Illinois University, where she taught general and oral pathology, public health, and multicultural dental hygiene. Sherri enjoys integrating her years of experience into CE courses to empower dental professionals in the process of care. She is an approved speaker of and holds a pathology fellowship in the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, is a past president of the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association, and a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Honors include Community Service, Research, and Teacher of the Year awards at SIU, Illinois Department of Public Health Oral Health Champion, and the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction.
The commitment to an interdisciplinary approach for care makes dental professionals key stakeholders in maintaining overall health for patients. From heart disease to rheumatoid arthritis, an understanding of the perio-systemic link is vital in the responsibility to assist patients in management of chronic illness. This evidence-based course examines several chronic health conditions, and the role pathogenic oral bacteria play in disease pathophysiology. Oral pathologies that develop from either the condition itself or pharmacologic agents utilized in treatment will be explored, engaging participants in differential diagnoses during case presentations. Hygienists empowered to be active participants in total patient health can differentiate a practice and build confidence and appreciation among patients,

Medical emergencies are defined as any condition that if left untreated may lead to patient morbidity or mortality. However, if your definition of an emergency is any condition of a patient that raises your blood pressure or pulse rate - then you need to take this course.
Medical emergencies happen. Studies estimate that on average a practitioner will be faced with a medical emergency in the dental office at least twice a year. Some of these occurrences can be minor; some of these situations can be life threatening. The good news for practitioners is that 75% of emergencies can
be mitigated with good local anesthesia (pain control) and good stress reduction (sedation). For those few instances when an appropriate response could be life saving, each practitioner must be prepared with a properly equipped emergency drug kit. The purpose of the course is to emphasize patient safety, and educate you on the seven essential drugs you must be familiar with to manage any medical emergency.
Even though the right answer always includes dialing 9-1-1, you can start the chain of survival in your office.

**This program fulfills the requirements of continuing education for Dentists and Dental Hygienists on the impact of opioid abuse and/or the proper prescription writing and use of opioids, along with appropriate alternatives in the dental practice.
Legal and illicit psychoactive substances are ubiquitous in our communities, including the patients we treat daily. Use and abuse, of opiates date back hundreds, even thousands of years, but is their modern-day compounds that are both merciful and malevolent. This program will discuss the most important points of use to understand today, in order to mitigate acute risks when prescribing opiates, treating patients already using them and what long term risks will become inherent in patients that continue to use them. This program will discuss these questions from both a historical and present-day view, taking into consideration the law that governs their use and distribution, their physiology and clinical effects, benefits and detriments to use and what our roles and responsibilities are as health care providers and clinicians when treatment planning.
