Course Description:
Dentists in the state of Michigan are required periodically to attend continuing education
for ethics and jurisprudence. This course will discuss the legal and ethical requirements
related to proper supervision and delegation of procedures by Michigan dentists to dental
assistants and hygienists. This course will also discuss the recent changes to the Michigan
Administrative Code Rules regarding which procedures may be delegated to a registered
dental assistant.

Matt LaMaster, Esq. is the Founder and Principal attorney of The LaMaster Law Firm, PLLC, a law firm focused on providing legal services to dental professionals and their practices. Matt is licensed to practice law in Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida. Prior to forming LaMaster Law, Matt spent a major part of his career providing services as corporate counsel for a multi-location dental practice. Matt negotiated, structured, and implemented multiple acquisitions and mergers and negotiated employment contracts for associate dentists during his career as corporate counsel. Matt also worked for a large law firm, where he gained significant experience counseling his clients in business and corporate matters, real estate transactions, construction law, bankruptcy, and complex litigation matters. In addition, Matt most recently served as in-house counsel and compliance officer for a multistate technology company that focused on serving the healthcare industry.

Course Objectives:
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
• Understand the ethical components present in practicing dentistry.
• Understand the jurisprudence process in Michigan.
• Understand what procedures can be legally delegated to hygienists and dental assistants.
• Understand what supervision and what level of supervision is required when a procedure is
delegated.
• Understand the difference between delegation and supervision and the corresponding legal
and ethical requirements for each.
